Java Tsunami
The magnitude 7.1 subduction quake south of Java last night was accompanied, unsurprisingly, by a moderate local tsunami with a maximum run-up of about 2 meters. The quake was roughly 1000 times smaller than the Sumatra-Andaman Islands Quake, and the tsunami was only about a tenth of the height. There have been only five reported deaths so far, and unless this increases drastically, I'd have to say that the tsunami readiness in Indonesia has improved greatly. So far, the suspected largest aftershock followed less than an hour after the main quake. There will still probably be at least another 7 or so aftershocks that will be felt on land in Java. Although there will be a relatively large number of aftershocks, the quake was far enough out to sea that only the strongest will have an effect on land.
