Java quake much bigger than first thought

When I last posted, the best estimate of the magnitude of the Java earthquake was 7.1. The magnitude now seems to have been closer to 7.7. This is nearly 10 times as large as originally figured. The death toll is now up considerably to over 200, but that's not unexpected for a quake this large hitting a very densely populated area. The quake was part of the ongoing subduction of the Australian Plate beneath the Sunda Plate at the Java Trench.
